Getting help for a drug or alcohol problem costs money. Many addicts may not have many resources to draw from precisely because of the situation they are confronting.
Yet many addicts find themselves spending tens of thousands of dollars on rehab programs… only to find that they’re not effective. In fact, a recent report by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse Addiction found that treatment programs do not have proper regulation and are not held accountable. So, what patients would desire would obviously be high impact drug and alcohol rehab programs to get the best bang for their buck.
So how do you find low cost, high impact drug and alcohol rehab programs?
Compare success rates
Reliable treatment centers will have some statistics about how patients fare after treatment (Help Guide). Preferably, rates from an objective outside agency – not their marketing team – are desirable. That way, you’re not just comparing price tags; you’re also looking at the results you may actually achieve for the cost.Consider what you really need
Many drug programs don’t just address issues with addiction. They’ll also provide support for detoxification, treatment of infectious diseases, therapy for other mental health issues, and more. These additional services can lead to more effective treatment, but they can also add to the price. Find a program that’s directly targeted for your specific needs.
Look for free resources to supplementBut what if you do have multiple needs that should be addressed in order to confront your drug problem? There may be free or low cost outside resources that you can use in addition to your primary drug rehabilitation program, so that you can opt for the most effective ones rather than trying to find one that meets all of your individual needs. Contact the human services department where you live to see what’s available to you.Read more: Paying for Treatment
Visit the facility
Before you make any kind of irreversible decision, ask if you can visit the treatment center and take a tour of what they have to offer. Obviously, no matter where you go, the staff will try to put their best foot forward, but at least you’ll get a sense of the atmosphere and be able to see with your own eyes exactly where your money is going. If a large portion of the tour is spent wandering around the beautiful gardens and the outdoor swimming pool, you’re probably getting a place that sees itself as much as a resort as it does a rehab clinic. Visiting will give you an opportunity to determine the kind of environment that is right for you.
Talk to former patients
One of the best ways to get the real story about a particular facility or treatment program is to ask to speak with people who have already gone through it. These people would know which high impact drug and alcohol rehab programs are effective. You’re much less likely to get the sales pitch of the people running the program, and it will be easier to talk about the nitty gritty of how effective the treatment truly was and what you can expect on a day-to-day basis. Don’t be surprised if you find out that the facility managers describe the experience one way, while former patients say something completely different – two very different perspectives isn’t necessarily a negative. Try to get multiple accounts so you’ll have more information to base your decision on.
If finances are truly a big concern for you, it’s also possible to use the low cost of a program as your starting point and then ask questions about what is and isn’t included so you can supplement it with other free services if needed. Many states offer free or low-cost substance abuse treatment, as do a number of religious and non-religious nonprofit organizations, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and the Salvation Army. The downside of many of these programs is that they have a long waiting list, they don’t specifically focus on substance abuse, or possibly both.
When selecting a drug or alcohol rehab program, think of the cost of a treatment program in terms of value for what you need. Remember, we’re looking for high impact drug and alcohol rehab programs that are also cost effective. You may pay a bit more to get more effective treatment, but a number of places offer sliding scale fees.
And if the end goal is a better life, isn’t it worth it?
