Marijuana remains the most commonly usage of illicit drug in the U.S. There were an estimated 2.4 million persons in the U.S. who started using marijuana in 1995. According to data from the 1996 NHSDA, more than 68.6 million Americans (32 percent) 12 years of age and older have tried marijuana at least one time in their life, and almost 18.4 million (8.6 percent) had used marijuana in the preceding year. In 1985, 56.5 million Americans (29.4 percent) had tried marijuana at least once in their life, and 26.1 million (13.6 percent) had used marijuana within the preceding year.

Marijuana Abuse
Scientists have found that whether a person has sensations positive or negative after smoking marijuana can be influenced by heredity. A recent study has shown that identical male twins were more likely than non identical male twins to report similar responses to marijuana usage, indicating a genetic basis for their sensations. Identical twins share all of their genes, and fraternal twins share about half.

Factors in the environment such as the availability of pot, expectations on how the substance would affect them, the influence of friends, family and social contacts, and other factors that would be different even for identical twins also were found to have an important effect; however, it also was discovered that the twins' shared or family environment before age 18 had no detectable influence on their response to use of marijuana.

THC
THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that makes you feel "high". This means you feel a change in mood and may see or feel things in a new way. Certain parts of the plant contain a more elevated level of THC. For instance, the flowers, or "heads", contain more THC than the stems and leaves.

THC is absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the lungs (if it is smoked), or through the walls of the stomach and intestines (if eaten). The bloodstream brings the THC to the brain, creating the "high" effects. Substances that are inhaled get into the bloodstream faster than those eaten.
