Consequences of Use
 The increase in Maine overdose fatalities is principally due to an increase in accidental overdoses, primarily involving illicit and prescription narcotics in combination with other prescription drugs and alcohol. The majority of the individuals who died from methadone toxicity were not involved in methadone maintenance programs.

 From 1997 to 2002, there were 374 drug-related fatalities in the state. (the 2002 figures are projected based on half-year numbers). The amount of drug deaths have raised substantially in Maine over the past five years, increasing from 33 in 1997 to 90 in 2001.

During the first 6 months of 2002, methadone was listed as the cause of fatalities in 18 of Maine’s drug deaths during that time period, accounting for 27% of the fatalities. During the prior year, methadone was listed as the cause of death in 14 drug deaths.

Crime and Drug-Related Crime
During FY 2002, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) made 520 arrests.

There were 1,230 arrests for drug sale/production in Maine in 2003.

There were 782 total juvenile drug arrests and 579 juvenile arrests for cannabis possession in the state during 2003.

In 2004, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported 99 drug arrests in the state.

 Law enforcement throughout Maine report a raise in the amount of thefts and burglaries related to prescription drug abuse.
