Cocaine usage has been linked to different types of heart disease. Coke has been found to trigger chaotic heart rhythms, called ventricular fibrillation; accelerate heartbeat and breathing; and increase blood pressure and raise body temperature. Physical symptoms may include chest pain, nausea, blurred vision, fever, muscle spasms, convulsions and coma.

Research has revealed a potentially dangerous interaction between coke and alcohol. Taken together, the two substances are converted by the body to cocaethylene. Cocaethylene has a longer lenght of action in the brain and is more toxic than either drug alone. While more research needs to be done, it is noteworthy that the mixture of coke and alcohol is the most common two-drug combination that results in drug-related death.

Cocaine Abuse
Cocaine and crack cociane deaths  did not increase, except in Detroit, where they decreased substantially, and Phoenix, where 1999 deaths outnumbered the deaths for 1993-1998 all together. After increasing in many places during the last 6-month period, cocaine and crack cociane emergency department (ED) mentions decreased significantly in seven different cities (Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC). Nonsignificant ED decreases were reported in the majority of other cities; only two significant increases were noted (in St. Louis and Baltimore).

Cocaine and crack cocaine are the primary drug of choice for drug rehab admissions in six CEWG sites, excluding Baltimore where heroin dependency and cocaine addiction admissions are evenly distributed. Cocaine addiction treatment and ED admissions tend to involve older people, and the 35-and-older cohort seems to be increasing in many locations. Mixed trends were found in cocaine-positive urinalysis percentages among adult male arrestees, with increases at two sites (Dallas and Washington, DC), declines at three (Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia), and stable trends at the rest; crack/cocaine are now surpassed by marijuana in all but six cities.
